Welcome to the Web Crypto WG wiki page !
This page intend to reflect the on going work handled in this WG, with links to deliverables, and sharing as much as possible about our activities.
Status has been updated in July 2013.
WG charter and History
This WG has been kicked off in May 2012 after W3C made several workshops on security and identity topic. Our charter is here
WG Participants
While having 70 participants from 26 organizations and 8 Invited Experts, this WG is always recruiting participants :)
The list of current participants is here
WG Deliverables
Our charter covers the delivery of an API to help developers to use cryptographic primitives. At the moment, we are working on several documents :
- Use cases and requirements [1] : a note gathering the rationale for the Web Crypto APIs
- A low level API, named Web Crypto API [2] : the actual cryptographic primitives, this specification is moving towards Candidate Recommendation [3]. It is expected to exit Implementation Call in March 2015. Read the way we manage specification track and check where we are in this adventure here
- A Web Crypto Key Discovery API spec : a separate API allowing to retrieve keys, currently a Working Draft.
STATUS of web crypto activity for TPAC : here
- A security framework description (on hold at the moment) [4]
- A high level API (on hold at the moment) [5]
WG Future Work
The WG is also conducting some prospective work, for next version of the specifications, to be elaborated in 2014/2015
- Integration of Streams in Web Crypto API
- Certificate management and usage
- Retrieving several keys
- Dealing with hardware tokens
- Integration of new algorithms
- Potential new requirements from Web RTC
- Potential new requirements from Web Payment activity
Wiki reporting that work is accessible here Some ideas related to the Web Crypto Next Workshop held in Sept 2014 can be found here [6]
WG Testing activity
The maturity of our specifications requires to start the testing activities. Information can be found under the dedicated page
Available tests for Web Crypto API (as gathered in December 2014)
