The objective of this technique is to show how using a non-text mark to convey information can make content difficult to comprehend. A non-text mark may be non-text content such as an image, or a font glyph which is not text nor an image of text.

Font glyphs are text. This whole section is nonsense.

I suggest rewording the failure to avoid the use of non-text mark and just use "graphical symbol". I have updated the description to explain what a graphical symbol is and have included examples (see proposal below). This commentor has also complained about the use of the chat application example in issue 763. This issue has already been resolved with a rewwrite of the example. A graphical symbol may be an image, an image of text or a pictorial or decorative character symbol (glyph) which imparts information nonverbally. Examples of graphical symbols include an image of a red circle with a line through it, a "smiley" face, or a glyph which represents a checkmark, arrow, or other symbol but is not the Unicode character with that meaning. Assistive technology users may have difficulty determining the meaning of the graphical symbol. If a graphical symbol is used to convey information, provide an alternative using features of the technology or use a different mechanism that can be marked with an alternative to represent the graphical symbol. For example, an image with a text alternative can be used instead of the glyph. Internal WD updated 02 March 2007.

Resolution: We have changed the title of the failure to use the term "graphical symbol" rather than non-text mark and updated the description to include non-text marks that are images.
