1. Instructions

Review the rule audio or video that plays automatically has a control mechanism and answer the questions in this survey.

Note: This is an atomic rule for the composite rule: 'Audio' or 'video' avoids automatically playing audio.

If there are issues with the rule, you may either open an issue in GitHub or provide details in the entry fields for the applicable question.

Responder Rule assumptionsComments
Wilco Fiers
Trevor Bostic Yes
Levon Spradlin Yes
Kathy Eng I don't know. My questions are documented below. Would assumptions be a good place to put "The control to turn off the sounds is located near the beginning of the page to allow the control to be easily and quickly discovered by users."?
Charu Pandhi Yes
Mary Jo Mueller Yes It is true that technique G170 says "provide the control near the beginning of the Web page". So if you're verifying this technique, that may have to be an assumption that it is indeed located there. However, SC 1.4.2 Audio Control does not state this as a requirement. The techniques aren't normative, but in this case it seems the technique is trying to introduce additional requirements - which it can't.

Responder Implementation dataComments
Wilco Fiers I don't know. My questions or comments are documented below. There are some cantTells, so that would suggest this is insufficient for us to approve publication. SortSite does have a complete implementation of the composite rule. We could consider allowing it for that reason. Needs discussion.
Trevor Bostic I don't know. My questions or comments are documented below. For the videos with autoplay and custom controls, when autoplay occurs for the first time, the 'play/pause' button says 'play' when clicking it will actually pause.
Levon Spradlin Yes
Kathy Eng Yes
Charu Pandhi No. I have opened an issue in GitHub or have documented my comments below. Why are we saying 'instrument instead of a control mechanism as in the rule description? even better if we can say what kind of controls.
Mary Jo Mueller I don't know. My questions or comments are documented below. Very concerning there are 8/11 test cases with can't tells in the implementation. This means there aren't any implementations and the rule stalls.

5. Consistent with accessibility requirements

Is the rule consistent with existing accessibility standards (e.g. WCAG, ARIA, etc.)?

Responder Consistent with accessibility requirementsComments
Wilco Fiers Yes
Trevor Bostic I don't know. My questions or comments are documented below. Unsure why 1.4.2 is not part of the accessibility mapping. It is confusing that it is mentioned several times in the background section and it seems it would apply. In what cases could you fail this rule without failing 1.4.2?
Levon Spradlin Yes
Kathy Eng Yes
Charu Pandhi No. I have opened an issue in GitHub or have documented my comments below. Should the rule map to the SC 1.4.2? if mapping to g170, how do you determine where in the beginning of the page, and should that be in the expectation?
Mary Jo Mueller No. I have opened an issue in GitHub or have documented my comments below. I agree with Trevor here. If you actually have a control mechanism on all videos with audio then you'd pass this rule and pass the criteria, right? If that's true, then 1.4.2 could be listed Maybe WCAG should have had the "control near the top of the page" as part of the actual requirement. If the full technique is to be tested, there isn't any part of the rule that tests (or any assumptions made) that the control mechanism is near the top of the page.

6. Remaining open issues

Are there any remaining open issues for this rule that were opened prior to this review?

Do you have any further questions or concerns about this rule?

No, I have no further questions or concerns. 4

Responder Other questions or concernsComments
Wilco Fiers Yes, I have questions or concerns, described below. I think the example descriptions are a little too generic. Instead of saying "has an instrument" I think they should specify what the instrument is. I would write passed example 1 like this:

> This audio element has native browser controls to pause, stop, or mute the audio

Not a blocker by any means.
Trevor Bostic No, I have no further questions or concerns.
Levon Spradlin No, I have no further questions or concerns.
Kathy Eng No, I have no further questions or concerns.
Charu Pandhi No, I have no further questions or concerns.
Mary Jo Mueller Yes, I have questions or concerns, described below. Agree with Wilco. Describe exactly what instrument is provided in each test case that has one. AG WG will want the descriptions to be better, so we might as well have this done.

8. Rule is up-to-date

Is the rule up to date? If so, the accessibility support should still be relevant, it should follow the recommended writing style, and use up to date links.

Responder Readiness for publishingComments
Wilco Fiers Yes, it is ready to publish as-is. I think so, assuming we're OK with SortSite as having the implementation for this.
Trevor Bostic No, it is not ready to publish and the reason is documented below. Implementation should be fixed and discussion about 1.4.2 mapping.
Levon Spradlin Yes, it is ready to publish as-is.
Kathy Eng Yes, it is ready to publish with the following changes. add "near the top of the page" and define "near"
Charu Pandhi Yes, it is ready to publish with the following changes. See comments above.
Mary Jo Mueller No, it is not ready to publish and the reason is documented below. No full implementation doesn't meet the criteria we have for a rule continuing. See other comments above.
