3. Tips - Icons

EOWG previously agreed on icons for Writing, Developing, Managing, and Advocating. For Designing, we have narrowed it down to 3 options. For Evaluating, we have one option.

To review past discussions, see:

Please see the agreed upon icons, the options, and some of the ideas rejected in the Icon Samples page.

The questions below ask about current options. If you have another strong suggestion for designing, please put a link to the image in the comments here.

Jonathan Metz I feel a little uncomfortable voting one way or another since I modified some of the icons so it might seem like I'm rooting for specific icon to win. So I put my preference, but I'll also go whatever the rest of the group decides.

Icon of paint brush.
Pros: Simple, clean, works well at all sizes

  • I prefer Designing icon 1 (paint brush)
Sharron Rush
  • I have concerns with Designing icon 1 (paint brush)
painting and web design are not closely analogous enough.
Shawn Lawton Henry
  • I have concerns with Designing icon 1 (paint brush)
I am concerned that it only communicates visual design, not user interface design. I think some people would see the paint brush and "Designing" and not go further to see that it also covers user interface design.
Melody Ma
  • I'm OK with Designing icon 1 (paint brush)
A nicer paintbrush would be nice.
Jonathan Metz
  • I have concerns with Designing icon 1 (paint brush)

I think most designers would hate to be associated with a paintbrush. I know I do. I hated painting in art school.
Brent Bakken
  • I have concerns with Designing icon 1 (paint brush)
I just don't like the paintbrush alone for designing. It is not the correct icon for the purpose.

However I do prefer the paint brush with the computer for broader design audience

Doesn’t really look like a computer for me, could also be “painting a window”… OK with it if the majority thinks this is better.

I think it's clearer than the other two and better association with Designers. I do think the brush should move up a tad in the rounded rectangle and I sent Kevin and Shawn a suggestion in svg format today.
Brent Bakken
  • I'm OK with Designing icon 2 (computer with paint brush)
This is okay. Better than the stand alone paint brush. But I prefer the wireframe icon over this icon.

  • I have concerns with Designing icon 2 (computer with paint brush)
It looks to me like painting on a screen - actually, the paintbrush is not really very evident so it looks like writing or scratching the screen. I don't easily see the association with "designing".

  • I have concerns with Designing icon 3 (wireframe)
Don’t like it, it doesn’t convey “creativity”.

This seems more relevant but clarity is a real issue. what about the compass and ruler?
Shawn Lawton Henry

Jonathan Metz
  • I have concerns with Designing icon 3 (wireframe)
It's difficult to see what's going on in a small size.
Brent Bakken
  • I prefer Designing icon 3 (wireframe)
I don't think the smallest size is too much of a problem. The larger sizes are introduce in the Overview and will be on the heading of the page. The megaphone has the same issue but it does not seem to be an issue for the group.
Lydia Harkey
  • I'm OK with Designing icon 3 (wireframe)

  • I prefer Designing icon 3 (wireframe)
I really like this because it emphasizes the non-visual aspect of "designing", which is a little lost by the paintbrush analogy.

7. Tips - Icons - Evaluating

summary | by responder | by choice

We spent quite a bit of effort exploring icons of Evaluating. Several were rejected for specific reasons — e.g., anything related to a checkbox was rejected and there was discomfort with a magnifying glass. We're left with a bug icon, even though some people were not keen on it previously.
Pros: Simple, clean, works well at all sizes; "bug" is common idea for programmers, QA, managers, and others (who are primary, although not only, audiences of this page)
Cons: Won't be immediately understood by all (some in EOWG thought of it as crawling through a website, which is good, too)

Lydia Harkey
  • I'm OK with the bug icon for Evaluating
Bug in IT world means there is a problem or evaluate for problems as mentioned. The symbol of monitor and magnify glass is another option that could convey to evaluate/review or scan the page.
If using the bug for evaluating tips - I think we would capture a vast majority of the audience and would be consistent with what the programmers, QA, etc are familiar with already.

I like the magnifying lens on desktop screen without the bug too (4th option after the bug option).
