What happened to the rel="apple-touch-icon"? Where can I find the discussion
on this? Up until yesterday, it was considered best practice to include this
link and it is still used by smartphone and tablet devices. What is the
recommended "rel" keyword for this use?

Today I got validation errors suggesting that the keyword is not registered.

Where can I find documentation and join the discussion for this aspect?

The error also has a link to a wiki page that you can edit to register the keyword. For reference:
