The XML Schema Working Group has published a Working Draft of W3C XML Schema Definition Language (XSD): Component Designators. This document defines a system for designating XML Schema components. Schema components are the building blocks that comprise the abstract data model of the schema. They are specified by XML Schema Part 1: Structures and XML Schema Part 2: Datatypes. The XSD specification divides the problem of constructing schema component designators into two parts: defining a designator for an assembled schema, and defining a designator for a particular schema component or schema components, understood relative to a designated schema.
