Posted on:The WebVR Community Group has been launched:
Our goal is to help bring high-performance Virtual Reality to the open Web.
In order to join the group, you will need a W3C account. Please note, however, that W3C Membership is not required to join a Community Group.
This is a community initiative. This group was originally proposed on 2016-02-29 by Chris Van Wiemeersch. The following people supported its creation: Chris Van Wiemeersch, Anssi Kostiainen, Brandon Jones, Diego Marcos, Malik Butler, Daniel Appelquist, Laszlo Gombos, jia hen Tee, Arturo Paracuellos, Donovan Kraeker. W3C’s hosting of this group does not imply endorsement of the activities.
The group must now choose a chair. Read more about how to get started in a new group and good practice for running a group.
We invite you to share news of this new group in social media and other channels.
If you believe that there is an issue with this group that requires the attention of the W3C staff, please email us at site-comments@w3.org
Thank you,
W3C Community Development Team
Thanks this is a really cool initiative. Standard and open web are the only way to have a long lasting innovation in VR.
So what’s the game plan here 😉 Just joined what’s needed to get some stuff going?

Will the CG also consider 360° Video Rendering?
Sure why not seems very much in scope especially if rendered inside of the web page.

I am super excited about this group. I would love to do my bit here. I have been trying to bring the VR experience to the JavaScript community and I started with building a simulator for 3D cameras. The idea was first proposed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgWonzhZIww
I have also built two apps (for now) using this simulator for LeapMotion. The code is found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgWonzhZIww
I would love to get feedback for this 🙂
sorry, the code for the apps which use the simulator for VR can be found here: https://github.com/nuijs
