Proposed Group: Geo-Open Data Business Group

The Geo-Open Data Business Group has been proposed:

Recent years we are witnessing a significant and growing proliferation of geographic-based information, both as to its availability as in their use. This proliferation is due to facts such as the rise of mobile devices (eg GPSs, browsers, mobile phones, PDAs, …) and networks, the availability of more complete, accurate and cheap mapping, the rise of satellite Earth observation, the opportunities for governments and companies for the creation of thematic geographic-based information, the popularization of free applications and services (eg Google maps, Google Earth, Microsoft Virtual Earth, …), standardization agreements (OpenGeoSpatial, ISO) and its implementation, the support for the interoperability of commercial and open source components, the development of 2.0 communities (such as Open Street Map), and the involvement of international authorities (in Europe the European Directive 2007/2/EC INSPIRE) to facilitate discovery, access and use of geospatial information and services.
In most cases, these geographic-based resources are available to their use by the Internet community very near to the Open Data principles.
The Geo-Open Data Business Group aims to be a point of contact among experiences in the openess of geographic-based resources, and in their use.
