News schemes
Art Kreymer gave me a run-down on news schemes which have been and/or are
in use at FNAL.
- BULLETIN
- From around 1980, bulletin (with HISTORY and TELL commands)
was an early scheme, still used by OLS.
- NOTIFY
- From the decus tape, without sources, notify had
functionality of displaying things once/once a day/
evry time you log in etc.
Used until recently on the central VMS vax.
- NEWS
- Something written by Art Kreymer, to have
NOTIFY funtionality with some improvements.
Used VMS/MAIL as the browser.
- D0NEWS
- The successful program from D0 taken to become ALEPHNEWS and
the NEWS program used on the central CERN vaxes,
supported at CERN by Olivier Callot.
A VMS/MAIL-like interface.
Principle VMS system news communication tool.
- Info
- (note mixed case.) A unix command from the creators of
"bulletin".
In use for unix system news.
- VAX/NOTES
- On the central VMS machines, the main
discussion tool.
Of these systems, Art felt that a W3 gateway for the D0news
information would be a first priority.
