In IF, "interchange set" is defined as: "The SML-IF interchange set is the set of documents that constitute the SML model to be interchanged." In SML, "model" is defined as: "A set of inter-related documents that describe a service or system." So they both are "a set of documents", and are obviously the same set in the IF context. That is, "The SML-IF interchange set" and "the SML model to be interchanged" are the same. bvgMaybe we should have called it "interchange model" to make this clear?
This can be viewed as a purely terminological issue and doesn't have to be resolved before LC.
Will discuss this post LC
Also, see new terminology that has been introduced in the IF spec (Terminology section).
resolution (3/13 conf call): mark needsAgreement Kumar, Sandy, Ginny & Kirk to discuss a proposal.
As per the resolution in F2F on 3/31, we'll use the term "interchange model"
Changed "interchange set" to "interchange model". Fixed terminology; added 'SML-IF document' term. See diff at: http://www.w3.org/2007/10/htmldiff?doc1=http%3A%2F%2Fdev.w3.org%2Fcvsweb%2F%7Echeckout%7E%2F2007%2Fxml%2Fsml%2Fbuild%2Fsml-if.html%3Frev%3D1.142%26content-type%3Dtext%2Fhtml%3B%2520charset%3Diso-8859-1&doc2=http%3A%2F%2Fdev.w3.org%2Fcvsweb%2F%7Echeckout%7E%2F2007%2Fxml%2Fsml%2Fbuild%2Fsml-if.html%3Frev%3D1.144%26content-type%3Dtext%2Fhtml%3B%2520charset%3Diso-8859-1
1. I feel a "tautological" statement coming on (I must be channeling Kirk now): Interchange Model - An interchange model is an SML model [SML 1.1] being interchanged. 2. I'd prefer the older "constitutes" to "contains". The latter implies "embedded" to me, whereas the former does not. SML-IF Document - An SML-IF document is an XML document that contains the set of documents that represent an interchange model. See [5.1 Conformance Criteria]. 3. There is content, both semantic and syntactic, in an SML-IF document that is not asserted by SML to be part of an SML model by the definition in SML.... aliases and model identity, as some examples. Thus it seems to me that a more accurate depiction would be something like: - An interchange model is an SML model (i.e. a set of related XML documents), augmented with data about the model useful for interchange, e.g. model identification information, and metadata about the model's documents, e.g. document aliases. - An SML-IF document is a syntactic representation of an interchange model. It includes the model's identity, its documents (by value or by reference), metadata about its documents, and a syntactic representation of concepts defined as part of an SML model but lacking an SML-defined sytnax (e.g. rule bindings).
I agree with bullet #2 and #3 in comment# 7 by John (I am neutral about bullet #1). +1 for rest of the changes.
re: comment# 7 bullet# 2: The WG agreed to use 'specifies' instead of either 'constitutes' or 'contains'.
Fixed per comment #9. We still have to decide on comment #7, bullet 3.
resolution in conf call (5/1/08): interchange model as in comment 7 #3 (dashed bullet 1) smlif doc: - An SML-IF document is a XML representation of an interchange model. It includes the model's identity, its documents (by value or by reference), metadata about its documents, and a syntactic representation of concepts defined as part of an SML model but lacking an SML-defined sytnax (e.g. rule bindings). mark editorial
Fixed per comment #11. Definition of SML-IF Document changed from: ------- An SML-IF document is an XML document that specifies the set of documents that represent an interchange model. See [5.1 Conformance Criteria]. ------ To ------ An SML-IF document is an XML representation of an interchange model. It includes the model's identity, its documents (by value or by reference), metadata about its documents, and a syntactic representation of concepts defined as part of an SML model but lacking an SML-defined sytnax (e.g. rule bindings). ------
The current editors' draft still has 3 occurrences of the term "interchange set": 2.2 SML-IF Consumer 4.3 Rule Bindings B. Localization of IF Identity Sample I am preemptively marking this editorial since (a) there is no conceptual change proposed, it is merely finishing the implementation of a previous decision (b) it might be possible, although "clearly" it is not required, to fix this before the next LC draft is published, given its petite size.
Fixed per comment #13.
