I'm all for it... I know Chrome/Opera and Firefox are thinking of doing this. How about IE and Safari?
IE/Edge currently lists its status as Deprecated: https://dev.modern.ie/platform/status/showmodaldialog/
It's actually removed entirely from Edge if you test. And I tested on mobile Safari showing it doesn't work there. Firefox (and maybe desktop Safari?) is the only holdout.
