In the "Footnotes" section of the Common idioms suggestions (see link below), an <aside> element acts as side note in the second example is lack of role="note". http://www.w3.org/html/wg/drafts/html/master/common-idioms.html#footnotes
why do you think the use of role=note is appropriate?
Because if an <aside> element doesn't being marked as role="note", it will be treat as a landmark "complementary".

"complementary" is okay, but "note" is more appropriate. Just like in many cases <div> is okay, but <section> is more appropriate. And a side note, imoh, is not important enough to be regarded as a landmark.
Please advise?
