Consider: <complexType name="something" mixed="true"> <simpleContent> <restriction base="string"> </restriction> </simpleContent> </complexType> This is a unique combination, a complex type with simple content and mixed content type. I believe that this combination is valid per XML Schema 1.0 REC. Personally, I believe that this combination is invalid and hope this will be ruled out explicitly.
