As part of discharging RQ-21 (provide regex and/or BNF for all primitive types), define a BNF and/or regex, lexical mapping, and canonical mapping for xsd:string.
(Apologies; in the prose description, for xsd:string read xsd:duration.)
This issue (defining the lexical and canonical mappings for duration) has been dogged by gaps in the linkage between the WG's decision record and the XML source of the datatypes, with resulting confusion. The relevant material has long been in the XML source of the datatypes spec, but it has not been clear whether it had ever been reviewed or approved by the WG. In preparing the Working Draft publication of this month, however, the editors confirmed that the relevant material formed part of the proposal for durations approved 18 December 2003; its omission from later Working Drafts resulted from editorial error. The material has been reinstated as status-quo text in the Working Draft to be published this month and in the WG-internal status-quo documents. Accordingly, we can now in good conscience mark this issue resolved, and I am doing so now.
