Agenda
cpn: several topics
cpn: Rechartering,
Media WG updates on MSE and EME
… Also AV Media Formats CG
… and F2F meeting during TPAC 2023
Rechartering
cpn: Our current charter ends at the end of April
cpn: So we'll need extension to cover the rechartering review and approval period.
kaz: The IG needs to
finalise the draft charter, then in parallel I'll request
rechartering in the strategy repository
… once the draft is fixed from the group's
viewpoint, we can start the security, privacy, i18n, and a11y
reviews, W3M, AC review
… usually takes 2-3 months
… so we should request a 3 month
extension
Kaz: I'll talk with PLH about that, to bring to W3M
cpn: (goes through the preview draft)
cpn: starting with Success Criteria
cpn: next change around Coordination
Engagement and coordination with other organizations in the media industry to promote implementation of W3C standards,
cpn: then scope
Identification of requirements for improved support for media-centric applications on the Web platform
cpn: that's rather
clarification
… then finally list of coordination
groups
… Audiovisual Media Formats for Browsers CG has
been added
… that group started around TPAC last
year
… will talk about that group later.
… I have some questions
… the new template has a new section around
Motivation and Background
… Is it necessary for us to include, or we can
simply remove the section?
… Second question is if we want to keep it, what to
say?
… Would be useful to describe what we do around
media on the Web
… The background and relevance is a positive story
we can tell, also looking ahead.
… My concern is that we potentially need some more
time to update that section and get consensus.
… So do we think we should write
something?
atai: I hink that's
useful a section to add.
… Maybe a few sentences would work.
… Others may want to read that section
… We should not spend too much time on it,
though.
cpn: I tend to agree.
It doesn't need to be very long.
… Is anybody interested to help draft
it?
cpn: Is it required for the rechartering?
Kaz: Not all groups have it, so if we need to work on it quickly, it could be skipped. But providing some brief text could be very helpful
cpn: I agree, my only
question is time schedule.
… We have to draft some text to be reviewed by
everybody.
… Once we got a consensus, we can send it out to
the horizontal review.
… Happy to draft something.
… we can describe the background and where we're
looking forward, etc.
atai: Also looking the
timeline, don't block the schedule, both are possible.
… Maybe we can agree on the draft during the next
meeting?
cpn: It may too long to
wait until the next call.
… Sorry, this came late since I was not aware of
the latest template changes.
… I can draft some text to be shared with
you.
kaz: Thanks, I can
help.
… Maybe have something within one week or
so?
cpn: And the next step is getting consensus
Kaz: If the other parts are fine, focus on the motivation section and ask for specific review on that from members
Media WG updates
MSE
cpn: MSE and EME
… The person who has been working on the MSE spec
is no longer available
… so the WG needed to re-prioritize the
topics
… We have a consensus within the Media WG about
what to do.
… Codec switching allows you to change encoded
video format,
… e.g., for dynamic insertion.
… The other major item is Worker support (not
Service Workers)
… There is some level of implementation support at
the moment, maybe only by Chromium.
… The other agreed proposal to work on is Managed
Media Source, which we hope enables MSE to be implemented on
iPhone.
… It's useful for resource constrained devices, so
could also be useful for TV sets which have limited memory and
CPU.
… It allows user agents to react to changes in
available memory and networking capabilities
… I think it's an interesting proposal
cpn: I would like go
into the details of the proposal at some point, possibly invite
someone to talk through the details.
… It also mentions reducing the power impact of
MediaSource APIs.
… Other features are likely deferred to a future
version.
… Other things thtat might be in the scope for v2
are priority bug fixes
… Not in scope for v2 is a proposed WebCodecs
integration, where Chrome were looking for partners with use cases
to develop this feature.
… Any questions?
… If we have time during the call, we could revisit
the Managed Media Source document in more detail
EME
cpn: Similar situation,
there arefew features planned for v2.
… Add encryption schema capability detection, and
HDCP detection.
… A proposed feature to find existing EME sessions
was de-prioritized due to lack of developer need.
… The WG aims to get a FPWD spec later this
year.
… There's a new question on how EME operates with
regard to the Clear-Site-Data HTTP header,
… which controls persistent storage that the
browser maintains.
… An example, when user logs out of a website, it
could use this flag to clear any cookies.
… How should this interact with EME session
maintenance and key management?
… Feedback welcome in the GitHub
issue.
… There's an argument not to clear EME sessions, as
there's some complexity due to negotiation with the
server.
… If any particular opinions, feedback
welcome.
… EME v2 ends with those features.
cpn: My recommendation
is to reviewing the draft, to see if these are align with your
needs for MSE and EME v2.
… In particular, I recommend WAVE members review
this, particularly those looking at CMAF.
… Any thoughts/comments?
john: Let's work together
cpn: Yes, let's coordinate
AV Media Format CG
cpn: This is a group proposal from Dolby
cpn: In particular
around the AV formats that they develop.
… It a new CG, partly because they're being very
careful about IPR issues.
… Since we met during TPAC 2022, we have developed
a Charter to define the scope of the CG.
cpn: See the link in
the slide here (above) for the draft Charter.
… The next step is for that Charter to be reviewed
by the CG and the people from Dolby.
… There should be a meeting at some point
soon.
… Then we'll here more on the actual points to be
presented and what they want to achieve, etc.
… That is to be scheduled, and I hope you can join
it.
… Any questions?
(none)
TPAC 2023
cpn: Last item for today.
cpn: When we want to
meet during TPAC?
… That's in Sep, 2023, although that's 5 months
away so don't have an agenda yet,
… but we need make decision if we want to have a
f2f meeting there.
… TPAC will be organized as a 5-day
meeting
… 2 * 1.5h sessions in the morning
… and 2 * 2h session in the afternoon
… Historically, we hold our meeting on the
Monday.
… I'm expecting the meeting will be partly
remote.
… Suggestion is either 1 or 2 * 1.5h sessions in
the morning or 2 hour session in the afternoon.
cpn: We can see last year's schedule, we had a 2 hour meeting.
cpn: My question is, do
we want to hold joint meetings with other groups, e.g., TTWG?
… We have not discussed with them yet,
though.
… We usually invite a presentation and discussion
from NHK, for their topics of interest.
… This can be during TPAC or a separate meeting
after TPAC.
… I would like to combine their presentation into
the TPAC meeting, as last year we did it separately.
… Please let me know about your preference, if you
would like to put something into the agenda.
… Roughly, I expect that we'll want to cover TV app
development in the agenda.
… And usually we invite joint sessions with CTA
WAVE, so I would like to invite them again.
… Do we have enough time for all the agenda items
in a 2 hour meeting, or if we need more time?
… Any thoughts?
john: On timing, WAVE
is preparing to meet at IBC on the 14th, so Wednesday would be a
travel day.
… Monday/Tuesday would be best.
cpn: Right
john: WAVE meeting at IBC the week before
cpn: So I would like to put all the media stuff on Monday/Tuesday so people can attend both.
john: Sounds good
cpn: Separately, WAVE has its survey on TV apps and performance, there is extended deadline.
john: We're trying to
understand how app developers are active, and want to hear from
everybody in the industry.
… We've had only limited responses so
far.
cpn: OK. It maybe would
be good to have some joint discussion in the coming months, when
the results are in.
… I have sent it to EBU too, so they may
respond.
… You may not hear from individual broadcasters
though. Some outsource their development, so it's harder to get
feedback.
… We did have an interesting conversation on the
topic though.
john: Sounds good.
cpn: Anything we
missed?
… One thing may be interesting to think about is
topics for upcoming meetings.
… Next meeting is scheduled for May 2. Maybe not
good due to the Golden Week in Japan.
kaz: Note that the next week will be the AC meeting.
cpn: Right, so maybe
need to cancel the May call rather than reschedule it.
… Any final comments/thoughts?
AOB
Kaz: So you and I will send an email about the Background and Motivation in the charter?
Chris: Yes, in the next week, then CfC with proposed wording
cpn: I would like to
discuss more technical topics next time :)
… If you celebrate holidays like Easter and Golden
Week, please enjoy!
