Meeting minutes
in memory of Garth
Ralph: a question was asked
does W3C acknowledge this?
… yes, we'll do a blog post
… Tzviya has volunteered to write it
George: I've sent an article I've written to Tzviya, Brady, & Laura
<Daihei> +1 to Dave: That's great!
Dave: we added a dedication to the EPUB spec
<Ralph> Dave++ for adding the acknowledgement to the specs
Daihei: I am collecting photos relating to Garth from colleagues in Japan
Ralph: there was a page that Brady set up?
liisamk: it was linked in Tzviya's email
<Ralph> sharing photos of Garth
Publishing Community Videos and Q&A Session
Ralph: community video
project...
… I haven't yet received any videos but it's not July
15
liisamk: Tzviya is optimistic; I'm running a week late
Ralph: we haven't picked a
release date, September is likely
… will we have a Q&A for people who've watched the
videos?
liisamk: we should think
about how it relates to TPAC
… we're taking August off in the BG
Ralph: would it make sense to schedule the September day around the QA?
liisamk: we don't want to overwhelm people
Ralph: I haven't looked at the September calendar. Do you have dates we should avoid?
liisamk: we didn't get further than "oh gosh, September" :)
Ralph: we'll need to look at
holiday schedules
… lets find a plausible date, liisamk and Daihei
… other logistics: what we've done for AC meetings
… presenters have small amount of time to recap the
presentation, with maybe one slide
… to spur discussion. Do you think that would make
sense?
… it tends to structure the meeting more
… you'd order the presenters with their one summary
slide
… or maybe just random
liisamk: I think having one slide from each presentation would be great
Ralph: maybe the presenters will already have a slide
avneeshsingh: I'm confused
… in AC meeting, we have major topics then we slice
them
… half hour for one topic, half hour for another topic
… here we have many videos
… if we have a summary slide and then questions, will
people be confused about topics?
… should we schedule more than one day, or have a
90min meeting with slots?
Ralph: we were hoping for many videos, but only have commitments from half-a-dozen
avneeshsingh: 2 or 3 from a11y side
Ralph: you make a good
point; once we get the videos we'll realize one hour isn't enough
… we may have themes
… George suggested that this might be an ongoing
project
George: we have a lot of webinars in the DAISY series this fall--six or seven
Ralph: we can coordinate
Around the Table
Ralph: what's on everyone's minds?
George: this month..
holiday!
… we've had presentations accepted for, 2 for IMS
global, two for AHG
… coming up in October and November
… and for AHG, we've had 12 presentations accepted,
around EPUB
Ralph: good work!
George: lots on Math and
STEM
… and pushing into the library space
… which is good
avneeshsingh: on a11y side
… WG note for mapping of EU a11y directive to EPUB
a11y specs
… first major deliverable from a11y task force of WG
… we finished issues of user experience guide in CG
… EPUB a11y has made good progress, we've achieved all
our major objectives
Ralph: I gave a brief report in a team meeting, and Jeff was very enthusiastic about this progress
Dave: EPUB 3 WG continues
working on issues
… we are massively grateful for Matt Garrish' time an
expertise working on the spec
… I feel we're probably a little behind on testing;
the subgroup is starting to meet but Dan has been out for a bit
… we have i18n reviews
… we need TAG review
… I'm working on explainers
… getting some new participants in the WG
liisamk: we're trying to
sort some world-wide difference around a11y etc
… lots of different conversations
… localized discussions
… around the need to touch backlist, and contacting
lawyers
… Christina is trying to keep everyone informed re: EU
commission
… and providing some guidance
… trying to convince people to go after the backlist
… the other thing where we're seeing differences of
opinions
… piracy is a big thing
… in the US and Europe, a huge concern for Japan
… part of why it's nerve-wracking is that it seems to
be becoming systematic
… we don't know what to do about it
… it's not a standards thing, but it's a business
concern
… one other thing... as people touch more older books,
concern about images, people thinking about kids books and cookbook
… thinking about new things for epub
… will that trigger a need for more standards?
Ralph: you mentioned images
… there's a proposal to update PNG
liisamk: almost every retail partner downsamples images
Ralph: the PNG WG charter
proposal will come out in August
… the biggest thing they want to do is standardize the
animation piece
Daihei: there was a ???
workshop held two weeks ago
… I was part of programming committee
… I represented the idea that media do is implementing
in Japan
… reviving the book stores and providing digital
transformations into the publishing industry
… creating and distributing ebook files, but also NFT
… as supplemental content
… or some special gift to customers out of our
magazines
… and they will be distributed or authorized through
existing bookstores
… digital and real coexisting together
… do this by the end of this year
<liisamk> digital is REAL!!
Daihei: working with print
book distributor
… I would like to get more participation via BG
… also, Media and Entertainment IG is rechartering
… I welcome the idea of collaboration with them
… gaming and digital companies are doing novelized
stories
… boundaries are blurring
… re: a11y
… the Japanese book publishing association dealing
with print books
… they established a11y committee
… to call for participation by all publishers in Japan
… and APL is working on this
… and EBPAJ
… I"m coordinating all of them
… and we have a new leader of a11y working group at
APL
… and there's a new APL group led by Shinya Takami
Ralph: who's doing liaison between APL and W3C? Kodashi-san?
Daihei: yes, and me and Takami
Ralph: he signed up for the education and outreach WG but not the other groups
Daihei: he will
W3C Workshop on Smart Cities Agenda 25 June, 2021
Daihei: there's video, too
ivan: nothing really
… Dave covered the EPUB 3 WG ups and downs
… # of open issues is getting much lower
… Gregorio will look at RS spec
… Dan is out on vacation
… he's reorganizing the test site, so it becomes more
clear how to contribute
… I've worked on a reporting mechanism
… everyone in the WG should contribute tests
Ralph: ivan commented that the derivative of the number of issues is negative
ivan: there are 1700 issues
Ralph: process doesn't
require getting to zero
… what comes next?
… I've covered most of my topics
… PNG was one
… I mentioned everything
ivan: activity home page?
Ralph: bill K wrote new text
for pubishing@w3c home page
… I need to review that PR
George: enjoy your holiday!
liisamk: enjoy yours, George!
