Meeting minutes
<vivien> Karen, can you scribe this meeting?
yes
Viven: The presenters will be recorder
… please do not interrupt presenters while recording
… but questions will not be recorded
… please raise your hands on Zoom
Rachel: Thank you for coming to this breakout
… to talk about new New York City Chapter of W3C
… look at future and past, hope you enjoy
… I want to hear what you want from a chapter, how we can serve you better
… First, an announcement that there will be a new WebInnovationX event, 16-22 November, all virtual
… live events between 10am-12:00pm ET every day that work
… it is the whole week, including Saturday
… there will be recorded virtual events and also some entertainment scheduled, pre-recorded
… welcome you to join the WebInnovation week; hosted in NYC, but I invite anyone to join
… I'd like to introduce myself, Rachel Yager
… I am the chapter manager
… WebInnovationX and W3C chapter
… I promote concept using the WebInnovationX
… we will record our activities at webinnovationx.com
… we will roll out different chapter activities here
… and recognize them in social media
… a lot of exciting things happening this year
… and in 2021
… Just want to talk about the genesis of how we created the W3C NYMetro Chapter
… and acknowledge someone important in this path
… she is the business development leader for North America and Australia
… someone who is important in this work I'm doing
… and of course Alan Bird, very instrumental and encouraging
… I want to thank them for recognizing importance of forming the W3C chapter
… and for becoming an evangelist of 2018
… and thank you your help
… the genesis of NY Chapter
… started back in 2018 with this notion of SymposiumX
… "X" can mean many things; x factor, target
… SymposiumX created as notion for financial innovation on the web
… we put together expert panel discussions to showcase financial innovation
… first event we did was in November 2018
[plays video]
[Web Authentication, Payment Innovation, Accessibility topics in this video]
Rachel: What I just showed was video of themes of SymposiumX since 2018
… we are going to our sixth event this Fall
… we have been consistent
… plan in 2021 is to have spring, summer and fall SymposiumX
… and I will explain how we have grown into notion of WebInnovation week
… it will have this spring-summer-fall cadence
… that is the plan
… It is wonderful for me to see some of the faces here
… At the first SymposiumX
… some of speakers included Jeff Jaffe, W3C CEO was keynote
… we had speakers from Google, also Ian Jacobs of W3C; and American Express, The Clearing House, Shopify
… we have decided it's important to have quality presentations
… no one pays to speak; we extend invitations to thought leaders
… we want to recognize W3C tech and business leaders and make sure that when participants come
… they are in the midst of experts and thought leaders in that domain
… for a new event, I received solicitations to speak
… we kept with our commitment to excellence; you cannot buy seat to speak
… in Spring 2019 we had speakers from Yubico, Consensys, WorldPay
… which happened to be two weeks before their acquisition by FIS; I believe the biggest acquisition in financial services
… Worldpay made big headlines
… in 2019 we focused on financial innovation, and also security, privacy and identity
… from W3C Alan Bird and Wendy Seltzer also spoke
… In fall 2019 we recognized that we need to talk about the business interests
… and we focused on web monetization
… we invited the CEO of Coil
… and we invited some working group chairs to speak on Privacy, Identity and Decentralized Identifiers and also Blockchain
… things in new trends, and of big interest as we observed in the industry
… the core value of SymposiumX
… three things: it's about community
… build next gen tech standards
… have experts, and do business networking
… this is why we want a SymposiumX
… Next, I want to go into the launch of the NYMetro Chapter in 2020
… we of course we are experiencing a pandemic
… at start of the year, I wanted to do a spring event
… we reserved a beautiful conference center on Wall Street
… and I like to have fun, serving them nice hors d'oeuvres afterwards
… then the lockdown came in NYC in March
… the lockdown was a decision point
… so I changed the format to podcasts
… I have a number of nice keynotes from Worldpay, Steve Cole spoke on security
… Regine Gilbert spoke on web accessibility along with other experts
… I launched these podcasts and started to move into the digital direction
… while focusing on financial innovation
… one positive outcome was to carry out our goal of thought leadership using digital media
… Alan Bird approached me in July to host a W3C Chapter in New York City
… of course I said yes
… and felt intuitively it was a timely move
… we need that kind of community presence now more than ever because of what we are experiencing [with COVID]
… so I signed a contract/agreement on how to function
… and share with you how and what a W3C Chapter means
… there are some formal obligations to fulfill
… and how we carry out our activities
… so the NY Metro Chapter launch happened in August 2020
… my company FortuneTimesGroup hosts the W3C NY Metro Chapter
… just two months ago, in August 2020 we launched it
… I want to go through a few things
[plays video]
[goals, mission of W3C highlighted]
Rachel: with these past phases, we learned a lot
… I feel blessed about moving forward with this leadership and community that we want to build
… I want to show what this means in terms of the core values
… SymposiumX is about communities, experts, and networking
… we want to carry on the next steps of AccelerationX to focus on innovation and startups
… and CertificationX is about professional development at both technology and business levels
… and how to move the tech into products and services
… core values, and I use the word WebInnovationX
… I like the "X" letter
… in these three areas, we want to recognize leadership in business, technology and innovation
… and carry it a step forward
… not only as a W3C Chapter, but also do research into impact of web
… and another timely topic about diversity and inclusion
… in past, it was harder to find women speakers
… to speak at SymposiumX
… this is something we can do
… me as a woman in technology and in business, we have to help each other and promote women and diversity of minority groups
… about how to tap into this innovation pipeline
… Also looking into podcasts; I'm learning how to do these
… and the different videos
… I am not a media house or a media person, but I recognize media is important to promote our work
… another thing I want to share
… when people come to SymposiumX
… when we met in person, it was quite an intimate event
… after the event, I make a lot of friends; a lot of people came, enjoyed it and had good feelings about it
… I felt it important to have some social events and have fun
… I have done that well, those of you who know me know I like food
… I offered champagne after the events
… carrying that one step further, in summer 2020
… I used an event by jazz singer Nina Blue
… and I also contributed that to TPAC social event
… I dedicated that presentation, and chose motivational songs to acknowledge
… the difficult situation the entertainment industry has experienced
… I know that there are a lot of things that the web and innovation can really help this and many other communities in business in NYC
… wanted to stress fun with social events
… and now I would like to encourage you to share your point of view
… what is the most important for you when you come to a W3C chapter
… what is needed in your opinion
… you can do it privately to me or to the whole group via chat
… I am seeing the chat
… thank you for saying this is exciting
… I want to make an exciting NYMetro chapter for W3C
… I have already been using #webinnovationx as handle in social media
… YouTube, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc.
… if you want to provide feedback, please do so
… and I am the only rachelyager on LinkedIn
… please reach out to me about how we can serve you better, make this exciting, make innovation better
… and have support of W3C itself and the local chapter to really care about what you want
… to move forward, do innovation, make the web better, and support our community
… that is suffering because of the pandemic
… again, please put in chat what you think is important for you
… experts, knowledge, open innovation; you may be startup, may want professional development
… Going to next slide now
… show the launch events
[video]
… We invited the Zoom CIO
… to keynote
… that was the video for SymposiumX in August 2020 during Web Innovation Week
… Harry Moseley, CIO of Zoom
… what was very interesting about his exciting keynote, which we plan to share on different channels
… and on the W3C web site
… talk was on the change of work
… new notions of virtual reality
… different ways of shaping the future of work
… there are many people working very hard in terms of web innovation
… without the web we would not have survived so well during this pandemic
… Also share that I have formed an advisory council for the chapter
… through this, I make sure we have a voice for diversity of inclusion
… we came up with an idea of reading poems
… during lockdown phase in NYC in July and August
… we read poems
… and I expressed idea of how Anne Franck would have felt if she had been able to express herself on the web
… the ideas of web innovation can move us forward
… the Web Innovation week and launch of NY Metro chapter is a timely event
… to capture that moment when we are thinking about the future of work
… not really celebrating, in midst of pandemic, but I feel that it gave us a sense of being lucky
… with W3C to set standards, have a sound pathway for innovation
… that was the feeling
… not so much a big celebration with fireworks, but in terms of our sentiment
… and how we want to encourage this community
… so that is the context for how we set up the W3C Chapter in NYC
… again, the next Web Innovation week will be 16-22 November
… and the cadence is spring-summer-fall
… we are confirming the speakers now, and doing promotion via email and social media campaigns
… I want to remind everyone of the Web Innovation week
… please look out for this and sign up
… going back into what we thought about strategic activities and roadmap
… Are there any questions now?
… please ask
… there is also, so back to what we do as a chapter
… What we do is to create a point of presence within NY metro community; build community and attract new members
[slide: strategy map]
… how we benefit customers/members
… and what we are offering in terms of SymposiumX, AccelerationX, and CertificationX
… here is the timeline
… want to engage the community to come and participate in our activities
… and help to strengthen our infrastructure
… in terms of a community platform to build up in stage two
… encourage you to come together and participate
… we are working on stage three
… which is rewarding and recognize W3C members and non-members who contribute
… we want to do different types of events
… to help everybody to enjoy our activities
… I think I will stop here
s/stop
… ask if there are any questions
… and stop recording now
Karen: I want to thank rachel for the SymposiumX and the launch of this new chapter
… we want to hear from you to see what speakers from your organization might benefit from this symposium one key focus will be Web Advertising
Rachel: Karen mentioned advertising, ad tech; that will be our key focus in SymposiumX
… mention that for CertificationX, Marie-Claire Forgue, in charge of W3C training
… and Dominique will work with me on to build up the developer community
… Tuesday, 17 Nov we will invite developers
… and anyone who is a developer, you will hear from me, sending invites to join us
… and the business community, it's no longer just financial innovation which is how we started off
… we are looking at web innovation from different perspectives
… on November 16 we will have a CIO/CTO forum
… and anyone leading innovation within their companies
… welcome to join us and be in this community that we are starting to formulate
… it will be a community that can interact on a digital platform in future
… and will be in person after pandemic is over
… and again, for diversity and inclusion
… we want to emphasize that
… and invite a lot of leaders in big tech and innovative companies
… with a lot of interest in inclusion and diversity to help us to talk and to actively look into professional development
… and also thought leadership in terms of innovation for this group
… for diversity and inclusion
… one thing that is interesting is that in the past
… SymposiumX
<vivien> s;s/stop;;
Rachel: there are diversity leaders from big corporations approaching me
… expressing interest in what SymposiumX is about
… and now we also have CertificationX and AcclerationX
… I am also a professor at Metropolitan College of NY
… one of my MBA students came to me and offered to help grow the Hispanic community
… I think there are a lot of opportunities to move forward
… and have an open innovation and web, and an open community
… thank you, Karen
… You can also reach me easily to chat
… I have started compiling people
… thank you for this opportunity to share
… sorry we did not record the second part
… but irc will cover that
… Rachel, thank you for coming to this session, and please reach out
