<Bill_Kasdorf> I got a link to download rather than a link to a Google Sheet
<Bill_Kasdorf> I'm on the Google Sheet on my other laptop
In the sheet, any time there is a chemical, we should remove it as we know what it will be.
Case does matter. <cap>T and t are different.
We should pull those out.
We should see how many conflicts we have, and then we could see if we need physical/biological, etc chemistry.
Should remove anything that is a unit.
In MathML units get marked off specially.
We want to separate chemical specific units for special treatment.
<Bill_Kasdorf> It's a semantic designation
What if a publisher wants further designation of a unit?
Neil: we are thinking of having a
kind of "alt" tag that may force a particular
pronunciation.
... it would be good to know if you want some additional
designation.
... There are two issues: MathML is in a "weird" universe. We
want to use it on the web, but we want to keep it independant
of the web, but still tied to it. MathML 4 will be much more
tied to the web.
... What also makes it difficult is that a screen reader
dealing with math is another thing it has to do. Give
context.
Stefan: looking at the sheet, I think biochem will need its own defintions...they say things differently.
Peter/Stefan: Think organic groups would be okay. The chem formula tag would suffice.
Neil: these are the things we need to know, what needs to have special treatment.
Peter: Seems general categories need to be "coded in" but how difficult is it to add things to it?
Neil: Should not be that hard, but if you build the dictionary up front, it's a lot easier to write out the rules.
Peter: In terms of special cases, is there the ability to have "on the fly" translations for special cases?
Neil: Could use abbrev text in
HTML, or, as mentioned previously, MathML is thinking of having
an alt text field that could handle special cases.
... probably won't be hard to impliment different
categories.
Peter/Neil: probably if we don't see very many terms in a subject area, may not want to impliment it.
Eleanor: Do we have tags for variables, units, etc.
Neil: probably not too many conflicts with variables.
Stefan: a lot of things that fall
into formulas that are generally used, should just fall into
general chemistry.
... If we account for gen chem, and account for bio, and
units...we probably have got it.
Neil: One person marking up a text, found a notation used 3 different ways in the same paragraph. You have to get down to where you get these ambiguities and tag it specially.
Peter: At what point do you just say "alright we expect the reader to pick up the ball? Understand this?"
Stefan: chemical formulas take care of orgo
Elanor: what about C double O. These could be in text.
Neil: bonds might get outside of what mathML can do.
Stefan: could use, for example, =
sign for double bond...and the MathML could interpret it.
... will do some sorting on the chemical sheet.
