The W3C's global audience is thankful to speakers for following those essential guidelines. They are crucial because they transcend language barriers, foster comprehension, provide people the time to get acquainted with the subject by reading the slides, in some cases translate them into other languages, in some cases share and discuss them with colleagues before traveling to the meeting.

Below are the principal guidelines, which can be read in full in the Speaker Resources W3C public wiki.

Setup

• We will aim to use just one presentation laptop; slides will be {pre-loaded | bookmarked}
• LCD Projector resolution: 1920x1080 pixels

Presentation Template

• HTML (image size for a full slide should be 1400x1050 pixels.)
• PowerPoint

Presentation

• Your presentation must be ready no later than Monday October 8, 2018.
• Please, produce reasonably accessible output. (Read more about accessible slides on the WAI website)
• Make text and illustration big enough that they're readable from the back of the room.

Speaking

• State the objective of your presentation.
• Face the audience and speak into the microphone.
• Speak clearly.
• Speak at a rate that people can follow easily.
• Use simple language.
• Expand acronyms.
• Explain any necessary slang, jargon and idioms; avoid superfluous ones.
• State a conclusion or wrap up with proposed next steps.

Questions from the floor

• Use IRC to record your question in advance.
• Speak into the microphone.
• State clearly your name and affiliation.
• Be brief, and concise.
• Speak clearly, at a rate that people can follow easily, use simple language, avoid jargon.
• Directly address the topic discussed; refrain from monologuing and broaching some tangential topic.
