[Odrl-version2] Modification and transformation

The current draft of the Common Vocabulary contains two interesting pairs of
synonymous terms:

 

-          Derive and Modify

-          Export and Transform

 

There was discussion within the ACAP team about whether these are genuinely
pairs of synonyms in current content licensing practice. There is a feeling
that a distinction is needed between acts that are purely mechanical,
requiring no creative input, and those that are creative.

 

The current definitions appear to suggest that Derive and Modify are acts in
which derivative works are created, while Export and Transform are acts in
which different manifestations of the same work are created.

 

Is that what was intended, or are we trying to read more into the current
definitions of these terms than we should?

 

I presume that examples of Derive/Modify would involve creative changes to
the content of the asset, such as editing, abridging, summarising text
(translating is a special case with its own term), or making editorial
changes to images such as re-touching, enhancing, cropping, sampling.
Whereas examples of Export/Transform would be changing format, simple layout
changes (e.g. change font, margins, type size, image scale/size without
sampling/interpolating).
