Submission request to W3C (W3C Staff Comment)

We, W3C Members Autodesk, Inc., Hewlett-Packard Company, Macromedia, Inc., Microsoft Corporation, Visio Corporation, hereby submit to the Consortium the following specification comprising the document(s) linked below:

  1. Vector Markup Language (VML)

which collectively are referred to as "the submission". We request the submission be known as the "VML" submission.

Abstract

This document describes the specifications for Vector Markup Language (VML). VML is a markup language based on existing HTML capabilities which allows vector graphical information to be integrated with the text and other data typically found in HTML pages. Vector graphics are well-known for offering specific advantages over the raster formats that are currently standardized in HTML: compactness of representation and scalability. VML is an application of XML. Its format defines stateless structured semantics that not only meet the fundamental needs of rich editibility and interchange of graphical date in HTML-based authoring tools but also offers a high-level of support for hand authoring.

Suggested action

We suggest that the Consortium adopt the proposal into existing work under either the Style, Presentation or new graphics work areas.  Further, expect that multiple standards for the encoding of graphical, non-textual information and its later presentation may be required to me different market requirements.  Ideally work on this proposal should move forward with a bias towards existing market practice, and then be followed by a longer term effort at realizing interoperability and functional scalability between different approaches to the problem if vector graphics on the Web.

Resources

To help with this work, we expect to be able to provide technical editing assistance to the Consortium.

Change control

Should any changes be required to the document, we would expect future versions to be produced by W3C process.
