Workshop on Position Dependent Information Services

Scope of the Workshop

While standardized technology allow mobile devices to determine their position with an accuracy of 1,5 meters (using the most fine-grained techniques), how to determine which information is relevant in that position is as yet unstandardised.

Position information is also controversial, in that it can both be used for significant violations of the users privacy, and significant assistance in situations where the user can not request assistance (e.g. in a medical emergency). While privacy protection for cases where the position information is used as an entity in itself are foreseen in the standards for mobile systems, privacy protection for cases where the position is used to retrieve customized information is not.

The topics for this workshop include:

This workshop is not concerned with the actual system for determining the position of a mobile device, as this is being solved elsewhere (e.g. the GSM/IMT-2000 standardisation in T1P1.5). It is also not concerned with the geological, engineering and other infrastructural data that often are used in GIS systems, as this is also being solved elsewhere (e.g. in the Open GIS consortium and at conferences such as Interop99). For an idea of the type of applications this workshop adresses, see the On the Move project videos.

Workshop Goal

The goal of this workshop is to adress position relevant data as metadata in lightweight position-dependent applications, such as tourist applications. The intent is to find and highlight methods for event and position notification that can be or are standardized, with the intent of arriving at a minimum set that can be brought forward as standard.

The workshop minutes will highlight requirements and use cases in this area. The result of the workshop will determine the continued work in this area.

The problem of position relevance of information is at once a mobile device problem and a metadata problem. This has led to the cooperation between the W3C and the WAP Forum in this matter. This workshop is organised jointly by the W3C Mobile Access Interest Group and the WAP Forum Telematics Expert Group. The organisation of this workshop is handled under the W3C process.

Criteria for success

The workshop is to be considered successful if:

Further work in this area will depend on the result of the workshop.

Expected audience

We expect several groups to contribute to the workshop:

The workshop is an open event; however, space is limited and preference will be given to (1) employees in W3C and WAP Forum member organisations and (2) experts in the field of position-dependent information.

Deliverables

As an accompanying measure for preparing discussions at the workshop, we invite discussions on the public mailing list of the W3C Mobile Access Interest Group. To subscribe, send mail to www-mobile-request@w3.org and put the word "subscribe" in the subject line. A public archive of this list is available at http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/www-mobile/.

The workshop is expected to result in the following deliverables:

These will be published on the workshop web site.

There will also be a poster session for papers who are not given presentation slots. The posters will also be available on the web site.

Registration and rules for participation

Position Papers

Position papers are the basis for the discussion at the workshop. A position paper is usually short, around 1 to 4 pages (there is a maximum of five pages, or 27000 characters) and summarizes:

Position papers will be published on the public web pages of the workshop, so position papers and slides of presentations must be available for public dissemination. Submitting a position paper comprises a default recognition of these terms for publication.

The Programme Committee can ask the authors of particularly salient position papers to explicitly present their position at the workshop to foster discussion. In this case, the authors are also required to make the slides of the presentation available on the workshop web site. There will also be a poster session during the workshop for papers who are not given presentation slots. The posters will also be available on the web site.

It is required that every member or organization represented at the workshop submit a position paper. Position papers should be submitted via email to the Workshop Chairs no later than Monday, December 20, 1999. Allowed formats are HTML and ASCII. Papers in Postscript, Word or other disallowed formats will be returned, with a request for correct formatting. Good examples of position papers can be seen in the QL'98 workshop.
