This is overcome by events. The Canvas task force agreed to use hit testing to provide location information of fallback elements rendered on canvas. drawSystemFocusRing was replaced by drawFocusIfNeeded which only renders the focus ring using browser conventions for a standard system focus ring. These changes are reflected in the canvas 1.0 spec.
