Standards for Web Applications on Mobile: current state and roadmap

Thumbnail of application platform diagram that appears in the report W3C has published the April 2014 edition of Standards for Web Applications on Mobile, an overview of the various technologies developed in W3C that increase the capabilities of Web applications, and how they apply more specifically to the mobile context.

A deliverable of the HTML5Apps project, this edition of the document includes changes and additions since January 2014, including a new set of features highlighting what tools the Web platform offers in serving user security and privacy.

WOFF File Format 2.0 First Public Working Draft Published

The WebFonts Working Group has published a First Public Working Draft of WOFF File Format 2.0. Based on experience with WOFF 1.0, which is widely deployed, this specification provides improved compression and thus lower use of network bandwidth, while still allowing fast decompression even on mobile devices. This is achieved by combining a content-aware preprocessing step and improved entropy coding, compared to the Flate compression used in WOFF 1.0. Learn more about the Fonts Activity.

Service Workers First Public Working Draft Published

The Web Applications Working Group has published a First Public Working Draft of Service Workers. This specification describes a method that enables applications to take advantage of persistent background processing, including hooks to enable bootstrapping of web applications while offline. The core of this system is an event-driven Web Worker, which responds to events dispatched from documents and other sources. A system for managing installation, versions, and upgrades is provided. The Service Worker is a generic entry point for event-driven background processing in the Web Platform that is extensible by other specifications. Learn more about the Rich Web Client Activity.

Call for Review: Efficient XML Interchange (EXI) Profile for limiting usage of dynamic memory Proposed Recommendation Published

The Efficient XML Interchange Working Group has published a Proposed Recommendation of Efficient XML Interchange (EXI) Profile for limiting usage of dynamic memory. This document describes a set of options that can be used to define profiles of the EXI 1.0 format suited to applications involving devices with dynamic memory constraints. Last Call: CSS Custom Properties for Cascading Variables Module Level 1

The Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) Working Group has published a Last Call Working Draft of CSS Custom Properties for Cascading Variables Module Level 1. This module introduces cascading variables as a new primitive value type that is accepted by all CSS properties, and custom properties for defining them. CSS is a language for describing the rendering of structured documents (such as HTML and XML) on screen, on paper, in speech, etc. Comments are welcome through 3 June 2014. Registration open for the HTML5 Training course; Early Bird through 17 May

The next W3C HTML5 online course is now open for registration. Acclaimed trainer Michel Buffa will cover in-depth techniques developers and designers need to create great Web pages and apps. This new course edition has been updated again, notably with sections dedicated to Web components and the Quota management API. As always, numerous interactive examples illustrate the course to help participants coding and making their assignments right. The course will start 9 June 2014, for 6 weeks.
