In order to support the use of XForms across a wide variety of platforms and user devices, the use of XML Schemas within XForms must be well-defined The minimal level of XML Schema support required for XForms conformance should be based on both the capabilities of such devices and also on the need for advanced forms processing on them.
To this end, The XML Schema-XForms Integration Task Force was created under the auspices of both the XML Schema Working Group and the XForms Working Group in May 2001.
The goal of the XForms-XML Schema Task Force is to specify a profile or subset of XML Schema that provides for the minimum level of support required for XForms conformance.
The Task Force's deliverables will consist of at least one profile or subset of XML Schema as described above, including XML Schema module implementations, and a written description of the profile/subset. This will be submitted to the parent groups for approval. It is intended that the deliverables of the Task Force be incorporated into one or more documents produced by the parent groups. Maintenance of the resulting text and modules will be the responsibility of the parent groups.
In order to be considered successful, the Task Force must produce a viable subset/profile of XML Schema that provides sufficient support for XForms conformance on next-generation handheld devices. Success will be defined as the final acceptance of the Task Force deliverables by the parent groups.
Here is our current list of delivery milestones with their expected dates:

Outside of this Task Force, modularization at W3C has been almost exclusively implemented by the HTML Working Group. XHTML1.0 and 1.1 are fully modularized, with versions for both DTDs and XML Schema.
For our purposes, XHTML Basic is a useful example, since it seems possible that something like "Schema Basic" might be the result of our own work.
