Domain Report - smart grids

In general, the domain for smart grids is motivated by changes in domain and more decentralised energy production.

The power grid was designed for centralised control, so this change is a huge task.

This involves a very regulated market and multiple kinds of stakeholders. This is more a matter of collaboration that pure automation

There is often the notion of a prosumer (production + consumer) i.e. homes that can create power via solar panels as well as consuming it with home devices

The grid operation is about keeping the power levels stable from moment to moment, balancing supply and demand

The automation regulates this in the order of seconds. There is also an energy market for 60 minute timeslots, arranged one day ahead.

There is also the selling and buying of energy which has to be integrated into the power market.

A third data flow is about metering, which today is very long term, e.g. in Germany it has traditionally been measured once a year.

Smart meters give much finer grained measurements.

We this have the three systems with different timescales.

Johannes cites a standard

This is a family of standards, see the first picture.

This describes application processes and it is clear how the physical measurements are represented. Physical devices are modelled as several logical components with common data classes.

These have values with well defined annotations for their semantics.

These are mapped into communication services (ALn->SCSMn).

One of the new mappings is to XMPP. Others include SOAP.

The aim is to decouple the protocols and data formats from the application code.

Johannes points to the next picture

There are several layers (business, function, information, communication, and component)

Each of these layers have two axes: domains and zones. These relate to where things are located and the business entity involved.

There can be chains of automation at the function layer.

The third picture

This describes separation between different systems and how this relates the above set of layers.

Basic connectivity, network interoperability, syntactic interoperability, semantic understanding, business context, business procedures, business objectives and economic/regulatory policy.

IEC 68150 has two working groups addressing the mapping to web protocols (XMPP).

Some other protocols include OpenADR

Ari: XMPP isn’t really popular as a web protocol, unlike say HTTP, why was XMPP chosen?

Johannes: there are spatially distributed entities and XMPP provides a routing system across a federation of servers which matches well the smart grid stakeholders.

Security evaluations of different protocols ended up selecting XMPP.

This involved a very strict security concept.

Dave: what are the economic benefits, i.e. the business case for the IoT here?

Johannes: the grid reacts too slowly when the sun comes out and boosts solar power. Likewise if the wind drops suddenly reducing wind power.

The other is the demand response, where consumers can be given incentives to reduce their consumption when power is in short supply.

The grid aims to produce power at 50Hz, but this will drop if generators are subject to high demand.

The power plants then are subject to contracts to boost power in such cases, and likewise, the aim is to reduce demand from consumers

These are the main business cases for smart grids. This is complex due to the many stakeholders involved.

For metering, there are privacy concerns giving rise to the need for anonimisation of data.

We also see speculation in energy markets that makes such data of business value.

Dave: how much scope is there in practice, or are there unrealistic hopes around smart grids?

Johannes: you could optimise for the money involved or perhaps the carbon footprint.

Ari: evening out the peaks doesn’t make a difference to the energy demand in the longer run.

Johannes: the contracts can significantly help to reduce the peaks and make the grid more efficient.

<Ari_Keranen> My point was that you can even out the peaks with smart grid and since the pricing at large is based on used peak energy (not consumed energy), that can make a difference

Dave: perhaps it is the people on the earlier call, so you could ask next week.

Johannes: yes, I will do that.

We’re still looking for ideas for sessions, talks and demos.

Dave: don’t forget the registration form which is pretty important

Johannes: yes, this is important so please fill out the registration form as quickly as possible.

Ari: is there any support for remote participation?

Johannes: not yet.

Ari: will you record the sessions? The time difference makes it impractical for me to attend.

Johannes: I will check if we can do that for the auditorium, but may be not for the break out sessions.

Dave: people who are unable to attend could still submit slides/position papers for us to discuss!

Meeting at TPAC in October

W3C all groups meeting in Sapporo. Several people have said that a WoT IG meeting is a good idea and would be able to attend. The IETF meeting is also in Japan during the following week.

We need a CfC to on having a mid-year F2F in America and an October meeting in Japan

This should also also for preferences for avoiding clashes, first or second half of the week,
