Agenda

Preliminary Items (~10 minutes)

  1. Determine scribe volunteer for today's telecon
  2. Proposal to accept the minutes from the 17-May-2012 (Benedikt gave a great talk describing approach to make XBRL and Linked Data interoperable)
  3. Discuss any important and timely matters and opportunities to liaise with other WG/CG/IG
    • Provenance WG has announced 5 working drafts for review including a primer, ontology and data model. Per Sandro:

These drafts define a model for interchanging provenance on the Web. They are looking for our input.

Main Agenda: Noteworthy Gov't LOD in 2012

  1. Highlight input to "Progress Report on Publication of Government Linked Data Worldwide" for 2012 Semantic Tech & Business Conference (June 2012, San Francisco) (25 min)
  • Data.gov.uk remains the leader with the most published 5 star government LOD, see http://data.gov.uk/
  • Per Dave Reynolds, the UK Environment Agency: Water Quality. Five star publication of assessments of the water quality at Bathing ("Swimming" for a US audience) sites in England and Wales. The data is a linking of three data streams - annual quality assessments, weekly in-season assessments and profiles (describes environmentally significant features and plans for each site). The data is live - updated at least weekly and sometimes daily as new assessments arrive. See see http://environment.data.gov.uk/ See also, http://www.epimorphics.com/web/wiki/epimorphics-helps-environment-agency-publish-2012-bathing-water-linked-data
  • External links include geographic links (to Ordnance Survey linked data), administrations and legislation (to legislation.data.gov.uk).
  • Tope Imitola, the University of Southampton Data Service, see http://data.southampton.ac.uk/datasets.html
  • Per Tina Gheen, the US Library of Congress Linked Data Service, see http://id.loc.gov/ This site includes vocabularies and authorities owned and maintained by the Library of Congress made available as linked data.
  • Per Martin Kaltenböck, Clean Energy data from Reegle, see see http://data.reegle.info for data, manuals and endpoint as 5 star LOD for re-use. See blogpost on same, http://blog.semantic-web.at/2012/04/13/reegle-info-linked-open-energy-data-cloud/
  • Mention NRELs use of OpenEI platform, an LOD success story.
  • Per Mike Pendleton, US EPA Facilities, Chemical Substances, Toxic Releases (TRI) to be published on the cloud and announced upon approval of a systems security plan.
  • Per Sarven, the World Bank Linked Data project uses the Data Cube and VoID vocabularies. The dataset is composed of World Development Indicators, World Bank Finances, World Bank Climate Change, World Bank Projects and Operations data. See http://worldbank.270a.info/ With respect to environmental data, all of the data sets contain something on the subject, and interlinked wherever possible. For instance, there are links between financial loans for a project and the corresponding information for that project. There is interlinking with external datasets like DBpedia for countries and currencies, and with Eurostat for countries.
  • Per Bart, realtime 4-5 star LOD about incident dispatch messages for Amsterdam firefighters, see http://kasabi.com/dataset/brandweer-amsterdam-amstelland-dispatch-messages Uses vcard & GEO, references Dutch Web Meta Data standard with DCTerms, and http://firebrary.resc.info to describe the incident itself.
  • Per Boris,
  • Per Benedikt, the XBRL dataset for Edgar, US Securities and Exchange Commission required filings. The project is called the Edgar Linked Data Wrapper, see http://edgarwrap.ontologycentral.com/ The Edgar LD Wrapper uses the RDF Data Cube vocabulary. Companies are linked to Freebase.
  • Per Michael, the D2R Server tool for publishing relational databases on the Semantic Web. It enables RDF and HTML browsers to navigate the content of the database, and allows querying the database using SPARQL . D2R is part of the D2RQ Platform. This joint project originated at Free University of Berlin and the main work today is happening at DERI. See http://d2rq.org/d2r-server
  • Hadley Beeman, et al's Linked Gov community project, see http://linkedgov.org/. Assisting others to publish open data using standards. See getting started wiki page, http://wiki.linkedgov.org/index.php/Getting_started
