Community Directory Requirements

This is living set of requirements for the W3C Linked Data Community Directory web site. Members of the GLD WG are encouraged to add comments, feature & function requests.

NB: It would be helpful if you annotate your request with your nick & a date in the event the developers have questions. Thanks.

Location

(Dec 2011/Bhyland) The site is accessible at http://dir.w3.org. If you would like login credentials in order to modify the underlying application or add / modify company and deployment, you're welcome to email support at 3roundstones dot com and request credentials.

Issue Tracker

(Jan 2012/Bhyland) An issue tracker accessible at http://code.google.com/p/dir-w3-org/issues/list was set up to track feedback & issues with the Community Directory.

Purpose & Objectives

The LD Community Directory is deliverable of the GLD WG. Details [1]

This is a "gloried address book" of organizations involved in research, provision of data and/or applications, or deployments of data-driven applications based on Linked Data principles.

  • Information is submitted by a project or deployment representative.
  • Entries are open, not limited to W3C members or invited experts.
  • Neutrality. The W3C does not endorse any of the organizations listed in the LD Community Directory.

The task force compiled a Community Directory Questionnaire in the June-July 2011 time frame to guide the design goals, first class objects, data to initially capture and application requirements. See below.

Design Goals

  1. Self-maintaining
  2. Data published in a W3C RDF serialization (or submitted W3C Standard)
  3. NO discussion/feedback/ratings system - don't want to let companies game the system as a means of advertising.
  4. This group is enjoined by the charter to maintain a neutral point of view.

First Class Objects

  • Organization = is a vendor, contractor, local/state/federal or national government entity, non-government organization, non-profit organization, research/academic, other.
  • Project or deployment = is an activity that could be a research project, proof-of-concept, production deployment, tool, or other activity associated with an organization(s).

Data Capture

Organization

An Organization can be: research/academic, vendor, contractor, local/state/federal or national government entity, non-government organization, non-profit organization, other.

  • Name of organization
  • Division or office name
  • Contact information ("General Email", "General Telephone")
  • website ("Website URL")
  • Point of contact ("Contact Person", "Full Name", "Job Title", "Email", "Telephone")
  • Experience = Business Semantics, Consulting, Middleware, Ontology Development, Outreach, RDF Hosting, RDF Store, Research, Training, Visualization)
  • Link to FOAF file (TO DO - should be included in point of contact)
  • Comments: 120 chars (TO DO free text)

Projects and Deployments

Products

  • Product name (free text entry)
  • Vendor name (Instance of Organization)
  • Technologies used (RDF, RDFa, OWL, from W3C)
  • Product website ("Website URL")
  • Point of contact ("Contact Person", "Full Name", "Job Title", "Email", "Telephone")
  • Additional Information: (TO DO - e.g., deployments 120 chars)


Functionality

  • Have "stub" entries, like wikipedia, where one person can put something in as a place-holder about an item on which they are not authorized/expert, to get us started, without offending or misleading folks.
  • Named queries
  • Visualizations - charts and maps
    • by country - organizations, projects & deployments
    • Others?

As a resource, here is incomplete map of different Open Government Data initiatives around the world.

For deployments, it would be useful to have something like SWEO Semantic Web Case Studies and Use Cases site. Linked Data project descriptions could vary from short summaries to long, detailed use cases. The site should let users do faceted searches on deployments, technologies utilized, and domain (e.g., energy, law, environment, etc.)
