HTML 5: Quick (and dirty) history
- W3C invested significantly into XML after 1999 and stopped maintaining HTML
- The 2004 W3C Workshop on Web Applications and Compound Documents created a separation between the HTML and XML community, which is still ongoing
- Apple, Opera and Mozilla created the WHAT WG and Ian Hickson (Google) started the effort on Web Applications 1.0 (later renamed HTML 5)
- W3C started to change directions in 2007 and … stopped the effort on XHTML2 in 2009.
